ROLLING LADDER SAFETY!

Rolling ladders are extremely safe and useful in an industrial setting, they include sturdy handrails and are very safe to use as long as you and your employees follow simple guidelines:

  • Perform Regular Inspections. Before climbing on the ladder, test the locking mechanism. They should maintain a locked position behind the casters. Inspect rubber the feet that touch the floor and make sure they are performing correctly. Confirm that handrail screws are intact and secure.
  • Maintain Guidelines. Only one person should use a rolling ladder at a time unless it’s designed for multiple users. Ensure that the total amount of your body weight (plus tools and equipment) won’t exceed the maximum stated load. Follow all manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Rely on a Helper. Don’t carry a full load up the ladder. First, reach the top, then a buddy should hand you things from the floor. When you need to get off the ladder and push it somewhere, your buddy can stand in front to make sure the path is clear.
  • Always Maintain a Stable Position. Your body should have three points of contact on a rolling ladder. Keep your two hands on the railings and one foot on the stairs. Or keep one hand on the railing and two feet on the stairs. For stability, wear dry, slip-proof shoes.
  • Provide Training: Any personnel needing to use a platform ladder should first receive proper training on operational best practices. Many users assume that they already know how to safely ascend and descend a platform ladder. However, these uneducated safety notions are often incorrect and unintentionally put people and equipment in a dangerous environment. As an example, best practice dictates that when climbing up or down a rolling ladder, personnel should always be facing the platform ladder, keeping their body centered between the rails. By implementing a proper training program that covers a variety of topics, facilities can protect their investment and enhance safety in both personnel and property.
  • Maintain and Store Properly: Tools and equipment function best when they are maintained properly and stored correctly. This logic holds true for steel rolling ladders. Since rolling ladders are frequently used in industrial type settings, it is not uncommon for a platform ladder to come in contact with oils, hazardous and caustic substances. In addition to making the ladder’s surface slippery and (potentially) unsafe to climb, these substances can damage the ladder’s steel, reducing the equipment’s lifespan. By keeping the rolling ladder clean and storing it in a secure, dry place, rolling ladder owners can expect dividends on their equipment investment well into the future!
